How’d He Howdy Dowdy Do That?

There was not as much experimenting when it came to the design of Ambrose Petticoat.

One of the approaches I’ll take for a new character is to dig back through my sketch book and steal something from one of the randos I’ve drawn in there. This is especially true of background characters, although in this case I did the same for the inspiration for Ambrose. Here’s the original doodle:

What I liked about this weird little freak was the very round body combined with the skinny limbs. Also, the elongated head/face with the down-turned nose felt like it was giving the kind of snootiness that I wanted out of the character.

It wasn’t much of a stretch from there to get to the final design.

Honestly, I’m surprised how often this has worked because, if anyone knows me, they’ll know that I don’t actually doodle in my sketchbook very often. So the well is not that deep.
